Sustainable Approach to Home and Garden: 8 Eco-Friendly Tips

When it comes to running your home and garden, there will always be a lot for you to do. However, it doesn’t mean that you have to take to it irresponsibly. Instead, you can look to ensure that you’re not only looking after your home and garden, but that you’re also doing right by the climate at the same time. In this blog post, we are going to explore how you can take a more sustainable approach around the home and garden.

    Why Sustainability Matters

You’d like to think that this goes without saying, but sustainability is so vital in today’s society. Our global climate is changing so drastically, and the more conscious we are about our impact, the better chance we have of doing something about it. Yet, one of the issues that we are faced with is the idea of not having the ability to do anything about it! Many people believe that their small efforts won’t change anything, but that couldn’t be any further from the truth!

In fact, being able to make small changes to your everyday life can go a long way. And if every single person made just one change, it would radically impact the world we live in! So, if you are ready to take a more sustainable approach to life, particularly around the house and in your garden, here are a few things that you can do to help the environment.

    Sustainability at Home

First of all, we’re going to take a look at the ways in which you are able to be a lot more sustainable around the home. We spend a lot of time in our homes and, as such, tend to use a lot of resources. However, there are always ways that you can become a lot more conscious. Let’s take a look.

    Recycle

The first thing that you need to do here is make sure that you are recycling as much as you can. Fortunately, many governments run a household waste recycling scheme that makes it much easier for everyone to ensure that they are recycling as much as possible. However, this does also still need to be something that you consciously do. Here, you will need to make sure that you are sorting your papers, plastics, and metals, and ensuring that they are all recycled correctly.

    Reduce Your Consumption

The next big thing that you can do here is make sure that you are reducing your consumption overall. If you are constantly consuming too much energy, you will be leaving a carbon footprint! But, you can look to reduce that by reducing your home’s energy usage overall. Some great ways for you to do this include turning off lights, unplugging electronics, letting your washing dry outside, and even making sure that your home is well insulated so heat isn’t escaping unnecessarily. The great news is that working on this will also reduce your home running costs!

    Go Organic

From here, you might then want to think about the idea of going organic with your products around the home. So many of our beauty and household cleaning products are chemical-based. But when you go chemical-free at home, you are choosing to use less or even remove all chemicals from the home. This is not only better for the environment and stops harmful chemicals from getting into the water and nature, but it is better for your health too!

    Reduce Your Food Waste

The last thing that you might want to do in this section is to reduce your food waste. So much food is bought every single day and left to go to waste. Throwing food away is not only irresponsible, but it can also mean that you’re helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and sending less to landfills. To do this, you can look to meal plan correctly and ensure that you are using the right portion sizes. If you do have the odd bit left over, you can then look to compost it, which we will discuss in the next section!

    Sustainability in the Garden

However, it’s not just in and around the home that you can really become a lot more conscious of your impact on the environment. Instead, you can also take this outside and start being a lot more sustainable with your outside space. Let’s take a look at how you can do this.

    Create Space for Nature

The first thing you are going to want to do here is to make sure that you are actually taking the best possible care of your garden. If you want to make a space for nature, you need to be intentional about this. First, begin by maintaining your garden well and regularly. For this, you can use a battery powered lawn mower and focus on using sustainable materials like cardboard for planting and reclaimed wood for any borders.

    Start Composting

Next, you may also want to start composing. If you are reducing your food waste as much as possible, the next thing for you to do here is to think about creating a compost heap in the garden. This will enable you to technically have zero food waste and create compost that you can then use in your gardening.

    Conserve Water

Alongside this, you should also look to collect rainwater in your garden. Using a sustainably made water butt, you can let water naturally collect in your garden, ready for watering. That way, instead of using a hose to do your watering, you can make sure that you are recycling the rainwater and reducing your consumption overall.

    Plant a Tree

Finally, the last thing that you might want to do in your garden is plant a tree! Planting a tree on your property can come with many benefits. Not only is it a beautiful addition to your garden, but it will also attract more wildlife, clean the air, add value to your property, and improve your mental health! Ultimately, planting more trees helps to fight climate change as they absorb carbon dioxide, which reduces the gas emissions that are harming the climate.
